October marks the start of autumn fundraising season for UK startups. Founders push for Q4 closes or start preparing for early 2028 rounds. Getting your fundraising strategy right at this time of year can shape the next 12 months of your business.

This free live webinar with Michael Buckworth is the autumn edition of our flagship Raising Investment session. Same core content as February, refreshed with the latest 2027 market data.

Why autumn is a critical fundraising window for UK startups

UK investor activity is highly seasonal. September through November is one of the two peak periods for UK angel and VC investment. Founders who prepare during summer and pitch in autumn hit a receptive market. Founders who leave preparation until Q4 often miss the window entirely. Our fundraising legal support helps founders prepare during the summer for autumn closes.

How UK startups actually get funded

UK startups have six main sources of funding: angel investors, venture capital, friends and family, grants, venture debt and crowdfunding. Michael will walk through each and explain when to use which for your stage and sector.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same content as the February webinar?

The core content is the same but refreshed with 2027 UK investor market data and legal updates. Founders who attended in February can join for a refresher. Founders who missed February can catch up.

How much can I raise as SEIS and EIS in the UK?

Incorporation is only the first legal step. UK founders typically need a shareholders’ agreement, founder service agreements, IP assignments, employment contracts, customer terms and (if raising investment) SEIS/EIS advance assurance.

What is SEIS and EIS?

A company can raise up to £250,000 under SEIS in its lifetime and up to £12 million under EIS. Individual investors can invest up to £200,000 in SEIS and £1 million in EIS per tax year.

Should I raise before year-end or wait until early 2028?

It depends on your runway, market conditions and the maturity of your investor conversations. UK investor activity slows significantly in mid-December. Aim to close by early December or wait until late January.

How do UK investors value early-stage startups?

UK investors use comparables, the Berkus method, and (at later stages) DCF. The webinar covers each method with UK-specific benchmarks.

Do I need a lawyer for my first angel round?

Yes. Even simple angel rounds involve a subscription agreement, articles of association, shareholders’ agreement and potentially SEIS/EIS advance assurance.

What is a term sheet?

A term sheet is a non-binding document setting out the key commercial and legal terms of a proposed investment. It is the blueprint for the final investment documents.

How long does a UK autumn fundraising round typically take?

A well-prepared UK angel round in autumn typically takes 3 to 5 months from first pitch to funds in the bank. VC-led rounds usually take 4 to 8 months.
