Michael Buckworth, the managing director of the firm, has a huge breadth of experience advising both large multi-national companies as well as early stage startups and high growth companies. Named as “Corporate Lawyer of the Year” for the past three years, he spends much of his time advising clients on corporate and commercial strategy as well as dealing with other issues facing their businesses.
Michael read law at Merton College, Oxford University from where he graduated with an LLB (Hons) degree. He qualified and worked initially as associate specializing in large scale mergers and acquisitions at the top tier global law firm, Shearman & Sterling LLP. There he was sent in-house with ICE Futures (the London-based oil exchange) where he was directly involved in the creation of their clearing house, ICE Clear which was the first new clearing house in London in several hundred years. In September 2008, he joined another top tier global law firm, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP (which won the award for US law firm of the year 2011) where he developed his practice to include various aspects of global capital markets as well as becoming specialized in corporate work in emerging markets.
Michael has represented a number of multinational businesses in a wide range of complex commercial transactions across Europe and the United States over the past years. He also has served as primary external counsel to a large number of companies over the past 10 years.
In January 2011, Michael set up Buckworths, then the only law firm in the London market to focus solely on startups. As managing partner, Michael has provided the direction to the firm as it has broadened its practice base to advise a range of high growth and innovative businesses both in the UK and abroad.
Michael’s business savvy, commercial vision and intellectual no-nonsense approach are preeminent in the corporate services industry and he continues to be recognised by competitors and clients as “a practitioner of the highest calibre in the field”. Outside the office Michael regularly hosts lectures and seminars as an expert on startup law where he provides valuable legal advice and discusses the different legal rules, laws and regulations surrounding the set up of a new business. Michael is also the lead advisor on a “Brexit Hub” being developed to keep the business community in the UK up to speed on the developments in, and implications of, the continuing Brexit negotiations.
